Ten Tips To Stand Apart As A Temporary Employee

In today’s tight employment market there are several things that you can do to stand out and help ensure that you are continually a first choice for assignments. Being recognized as an efficient worker that can be relied on for results will put you in a good position when the market loosens up.

1. Be proactive. Employees who are proactive in asking for additional projects and who take initiative during slow times are the people who are most often recognized, requested or hired by our clients. For example, ask your supervisor ahead of time what projects you can take on if you finish an assignment ahead of schedule, and be the first to ask for additional projects during slow times.

2. Be flexible. Flexibility is one of the strongest characteristics of an outstanding temporary employee. The words, "I don’t do that" or "that’s not in my job description," aren’t part of their vocabulary. They understand that in order to get a job done, we sometimes have to take on unexpected responsibilities or projects. This flexibility is deeply valued and appreciated by our customers as they work to meet deadlines critical to their companies.

3. Be prepared. Before getting off the phone with your staffing consultant, make sure you know the location of your assignment, how to get there, where to park, who you should report to, and how to dress appropriately for the assignment. Making sure you have this information is the equal responsibility of both you and your staffing consultant. In additional to getting information about the company and assignment, be sure you have a timecard and any other tools you may need throughout the day.

4. Be on time, even early. It is important that you arrive on time and ready to work, respect break times, and try to be a few minutes early whenever possible. If you are going to be late to an assignment, contact your staffing consultant immediately so that they can inform your supervisor.

5. Dress for success. One easy way to set yourself apart is to always appear neat and put together. Make sure your clothes are always clean, pressed, and err slightly on the conservative side of the company’s dress code.

If you are working an office/clerical assignment, always wear hose, closed toe shoes, nothing sleeveless or low cut. Dress as you would for an interview on your first day, adjusting your attire to fit the company dress code from that point on. If you are working a warehouse position and you are told to wear jeans, a T-shirt and tennis shoes, tuck in your shirt and make sure you wear jeans and shoes that are clean and in good repair.

And above all, wear a smile. Smiling will communicate to others that you are enjoying your work.

6. Double-check your work. Mistakes can be costly for companies, not only financially but in the time spent correcting them. Avoid errors by getting clear instructions before beginning the project, checking with supervisors if you are unclear on a point and double checking your work.

7. Communicate. Communication is one of the most important aspects of any job. Make sure that you communicate openly with your Carlton Staffing Staffing Consultant so that they can facilitate talks with clients regarding current and future assignments. Also, be sure to learn the names of your supervisors and co-workers so that you can talk with them about your performance and any needed improvements.

8. Be conscious of deadlines. More and more companies are using temporary employees due to unexpected demand and large projects on deadline. Be aware that these deadlines exist and that this may be a high-stress time for supervisors and co-workers alike.

9. Demonstrate a good work ethic at all times. Don’t take personal calls, surf the web, play games, read magazines or books, etc. on company time. Remember that this is your job and you are there to work.

10. Remember that you are a reflection of Carlton Staffing. Your performance on the job has a direct correlation with the length of your current assignment and any future assignments Carlton Staffing receives from that client. By putting your best foot forward you will help ensure that Carlton will have additional work for you in the future.

These are just a few of the tips our Staffing Consultants had for you. If you have any questions or would like additional tips on how to stand out on assignment, please contact your local Staffing Consultant.
